Santa is well-known to these children because he is a member of our ward and lives in Lexington (not the North Pole). His voice is familiar to many of them. But, even believers are okay with this because adults explain that Santa has to have lots of helpers! The logical part of my kids' brains is being challenged this year on the whole issue of what is real. They believe in Santa 99%, the Easter Bunny 90%, the Tooth Fairy 85%, (the percentages change each time we discuss it) and I am hoping that they still believe in Heavenly Father 100%. I am feeling unsure about how to approach the subject. Am I being way too philosophical?

When one of Santa's helpers was standing in front of the DAYBREAK sign (entrance to our neighborhood) waving to all the cars on Christmas Eve, I thought to myself, how many kids hearts were crushed because he was supposed to be out delivering already!?
My theory is that you can tell them to BELIEVE in the MAGIC and SPIRIT of CHRISTmas. Santa does have a lot of helpers and Mom & Dad give him cash or credit cards to do the shopping, hence the reason the rich kids get a lot and the not so rich kids get a little. Then as they ask questions, be honest. It is the only way. Just tell them not to ruin it for other kids.
We have to remember that the only all knowing (Omniscience), all loving (Omnibenevolence), all being (Omnipresence) and all giving is Father in Heaven. You are not too philosophical Jeni. You are not wanting a pagan holiday figure to overshadow the birth of our Savior.
One friend of mine waited a bit too long to reveal the truth to her 10 year old and now her child doesn't trust anything she says. It took a long time to build that trust again. He was in tears about it. How sad, huh? Pray about it =)
